Sandwich

by: Catherine Newman

Goodreads description:

For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.

This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

It’s one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.

Bonus book this month! Holly and I picked up this very quick and easy read. In all honesty, this book hit a little too close to home in subject matter, but I immensely enjoyed it. Not a ton happened in this one…just a week vacation on Cape Cod with young adult kids and aging parents…I needed just a little bit more from it in substance, but it was enjoyable and light. The cover art really sold me!

Maybe it is just me this month. This one was just pretty good to me too. Some very notable authors and reviewers called it “hilarious” and “perfect”. I am of the age (or maybe a little beyond) of the protagonist, Rocky, and I really didn’t relate. For me, it was way TMI. Or maybe Rocky’s hormonal bouts of melancholy and rage are transferring to me, and I am just grumpy.

  1. I gave this a one – Rocky was self-possessed and obnoxious from my perspective. Most of my friends loved it, however.
