We had a hard time coming up with an original tidbit this month. Over this rainy Memorial Day weekend, we had to use our imagination on things to do in the Port City that may be a little off the radar. Here are a few of our favorite things to do and see and hear this time of year in old Wilmy-wood. Some hidden gems…if you will…

- I absolutely love 98.3 the Penguin. They are celebrating 20 years on the radio! They play the best mix of music…it’s almost like a college radio station…they play classics and I have been introduced to so many new bands. Also, they sponsor local concerts and have their finger on the pulse of live music in Wilmington.
- The rose garden at the Arboretum is in full bloom in May. They have almost every variety of rose imaginable. It’s a delight to the senses and brings me a lot of joy this time of year.
- The ocean was crazy rough this past weekend. I am surprised it wasn’t a named storm. It seemed like a category 1 hurricane. I couldn’t wait to shell hunt at low tide on Sunday. I found a few hunks of well polished sea glass. Sadly, most of the good shells were broken. I will keep looking this week!
Holly says:
- Greenfield Lake Amphitheater – I love catching as many concerts as possible at this great venue! I can’t even begin to list the number of wonderful acts that we have seen here, but it includes Tedeschi Trucks, Allison Krauss, Old Dominion, Travis Tritt, Michael Franti, and most recently, St. Paul and the Broken Bones. There is not a bad seat (or place to stand) in the house!
- Wrightsville Beach Farmers Market – Stop by every Monday during the summer season, 8 am-1 pm. You can buy dinner, wonderful produce, beautiful flowers, gifts, great coffee, baked goods, jewelry, art and more! And catch up with some of your relatives and neighbors!
- Local thrift stores – I just love popping into some of our great local thrift shops – you never know what treasures you might find! Baker Street, Port City Peddler, Junky Monkey, the Primrose Shop are a few that I love to visit, and I know there are many more that I have yet to find. I’ll keep looking…
