The Housemaid’s Secret

by: Freida McFadden

Goodreads description:

It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want.

It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything….

That’s when I make a promise. After all, I’ve done this before. I can protect Mrs. Garrick while keeping my own secrets locked up safe.

Douglas Garrick has done wrong. He is going to pay. It’s simply a question of how far I’m willing to go….

This is a sequel to the 2022 wildly popular hit, The Housemaid. I must admit that I didn’t really remember what happened in the original book. It didn’t matter though- the plot came back to me as I read along. You need not read the first one to follow this one, but since it is such an easy read, I suggest you invest in it. This is definitely “airport book” fluff, but very entertaining and funny in parts. I also call these books “shallow” reads because I plow through them so quickly that I rarely retain the plot. However, this had a pretty fabulous plot twist…similar to Gone Girl in that it is not at all what you expect. A GREAT vacation read! Very satisfying- you won’t be disappointed.

As psychological thrillers go, this one is a quick, entertaining read. In The Three LIttle Bears terminology, this one is not too hot (as in The Quiet Tenant – which I loved!), not too cold (as in many mysteries that we read), but just right. I enjoyed this book just as much or more than The Housemaid. Similar creepy vibes, and you just have to figure out who is good and who is not – and it’s not that easy! And once again, things are not always what they seem. I highly recommend this one.
